Christmas time is here and the SPCA of Adams County, Pennsylvania, managed to help families bond over pets and pets have a warm and happy home to live in for the Christmas season and beyond, as for the first time in more than 50 years it is empty thanks to hundreds of families adopting the hundreds of dogs and cats that had been filling its kennels.
Taking those pets home, the families who did the adopting will hopefully help them live out their remaining years in a better way than they would have been able to in the crowded kennel or how they lived before being taken in by the SPCA.
Posting about the great news in a post on Facebook, calling the hundreds upon hundreds of adoptions a “Christmas miracle,” the Adams County SPCA said, “Today is a great day for the Adams County SPCA! Two weeks ago our kennels were almost filled, now we don’t have any dogs in the building at all (we have 1 cat that came in as a stray a little bit ago)!! Our community stepped up once again! This is the first time in 47 YEARS that the Adams County SPCA is empty let alone at Christmas time, it is a true miracle!”
Continuing, the SPCA said, “To say that we are beyond excited is an understatement! The staff and volunteers have worked VERY hard to take care of the animals in our care and to make sure they got adopted to the right home! This year we have adopted out 598 animals and reunited 125 strays with their owners! WOW! It has been a busy year! We thank everyone for their continued support and look forward to new adventures in 2024!”
The shelter then noted how it was paying its good fortune forward, saying that it would be taking in animals from other areas to help relieve some of their burden now that it has more capacity, saying, “We will be pulling animals from other shelters in PA next week in hopes of relieving some of their stress. Right now, we are going to enjoy this accomplishment! Merry Christmas!”
The Adams County SPCA, describing its mission on the “About” page of its website, noted, “The Adams County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), is an IRC 501 c-3 non-profit organization that provides shelter and care for lost, abandoned and abused animals, investigates cases of cruelty to animals, recommends the prosecution of persons engaging in animal neglect or cruelty, helps control animal overpopulation and educates the community about spay/neuter programs, animal wellness and safety.”
Continuing, it notes that it is funded almost entirely by donations and relies on volunteers to keep running and handling hundreds upon hundreds of animals every year, saying, “The Adams County SPCA is a private nonprofit organization that receives less than 1% of its annual operating budget of $650,000 from Adams County. We also receive donations from several townships/municipalities for our much needed services, but we continue to struggle to support the very important task of caring for the many animals that come through our doors. We do fundraising, memberships, apply for grants and receive some bequests. We take in approximately 1,200 animals per year and each year that number increases.”
