Yesterday, AG Garland announced that a special counsel would be appointed to investigate former President Donald Trump, saying:
“It is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution based on recent developments, including [Trump’s] announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election and the sitting president’s stated intention to be a candidate as well.”
Garland then clarified in his speech that the special counsel, Jack Smith, would not be handling the investigation or prosecution of those involved in breaching the Capitol complex on January 6th, but would instead be focusing on whether former President Trump or individuals/entities connected to former President Trump had tried to obstruct the peaceful transfer of power.
Smith, for his part, pledged to “conduct the assigned investigations, and any prosecutions that may result from them, independently and in the best traditions of the Department of Justice.”
Well, predictably, Trump was not happy in the least about the announcement, instead raging about when speaking with Fox News.
“I have been going through this for six years — for six years I have been going through this, and I am not going to go through it anymore,” former President Trump said to Fox News. “And I hope the Republicans have the courage to fight this.”
Continuing, Trump went on to say “I am not going to partake in it. I’m not going to partake in this.”
And that wasn’t all. Trump went on to rip the announcement for coming right after his 2024 announcement, saying that the move represented the “politicization of justice” in America, a comment frequent in GOP circles since the Obama Administration. In Trump’s words:
“I have never heard of such a thing. They found nothing. I announce and then they appoint a special prosecutor.
“They found nothing, and now they take some guy who hates Trump. This is a disgrace and only happening because I am leading in every poll in both parties. … This is the worst politicization of justice in our country.”
Trump then brought up what many people are thinking, which is that Hunter Biden has so far gotten off scot-free despite the laptop whereas the Trump family and its associates have been under near-constant attack since Trump won the presidency. Speaking on that, Trump said:
“Hunter Biden is a criminal many times over and nothing happens to him. Joe Biden is a criminal many times over — and nothing happens to them.
“It is unfair to the country, to the Republican Party, and I don’t think people should accept it. I am not going to accept it. The Republican Party has to stand up and fight.”
We’ll see if the Republicans actually fight. Mitch McConnell being the Senate Minority Leader again doesn’t bode well for things on that front.
Trump also posted about and reposted posts about the investigation on Truth Social. For example, he retruthed two posts by Mike Davis. One said:
By appointing a special counsel to investigate his boss’s political enemy, Attorney General Merrick Garland continues to politicize and weaponize the Biden Justice Department.
All while Garland ignores smoking-gun evidence of Biden’s foreign corruption.
The other said:
“It is apparent that the Department’s leadership, including Public Integrity Section Chief Jack Smith, was closely involved in engaging with the IRS in wake of Citizens United and political pressure from prominent Democrats to address perceived problems with the decision.”
He also retruthed a post by the Article III Project saying:
“Garland announced he’s essentially giving his special counsel whatever he needs to investigate the non-crimes of objecting to a presidential election (like Democrats did in 1967, 2001, 2005 and 2017) and keeping personal copies of presidential records (like Clinton did with highly classified tapes hidden in his sock drawer) both expressly permitted by federal statutes.” -@mrddmia
And, commenting on the matter himself, Trump said:
Here we go again! I thought that the Unselect Committee on January 6th was a dead issue, especially with the record setting loss off Liz Chaney in the Great State of Wyoming, and likewise felt that the document hoax case, after reviewing the Clinton Socks Case & the Presidential Record Act, was dead, or at least dying fast. The Democrat Department of “Justice” had nothing, except Trump haters, so they just appointed a Special Prosecutor to go after me further. Disgraceful!
