What is it like to be married to someone for decades and get to experience growing old and changing with that same person? Such is what actor Pierce Brosnan spoke to Fox News Digital about, describing his decades of life with and marriage to Keely Shaye Smith as being a “spiritual journey” in which the two have experienced change together and love each other deeply.
Brosnan is best known as the fifth actor who played James Bond, starring in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day. He and Smith married in 2001. Smith is his second wife, with Brosnan losing his first wife, Cassandra Harris, to ovarian cancer in 1991. He then met Smith in 1994 and they married seven years later, and have stayed together since.
Speaking about those decades of marriage and what it has been like, along with how the two are still deeply in love, Brosnan said, “We like each other a lot. We love each other a lot. And we’ve been down the road, and we’ve seen many, many hardships as families do, as we all do.”
Continuing, he then described the long-term, close relationship as being a “spiritual journey,” saying, “But watching someone grow up with you and grow old with you is a very spiritual journey. To watch each other change … whatever it may be, the hair, the waist. But it’s the love in the heart.”
And, speaking about his wife’s successful career and what joy and life she has brought to his family, Brosnan added, “Keeley is a journalist, a reporter. She’s an artist in her own right. And as a woman, she has made a family for our sons.” Brosnan and Smith had two sons together, and he had one son with Harris.
Brosnan then explained that Smith has helped him fulfill his career aspirations and explore the wild reaches of life, saying, “She allows me to go out into the wild blue yonder and do what I do as a man, as an actor, [she] always has.”
He also spoke about Art Basel in Miami and why he and Smith love attending, describing the art there as “exhilarating” and saying that he has always identified as an artist. Speaking on that, he said, “At this point in our life with the art, it’s exhilarating.” He added, “It’s always been there. Just quietly there.”
And, speaking on his own connection to art and why he finds working on it and developing his skill as a painter is so rewarding, Brosnan added, “I’ve always been a painter, an artist at heart. So, it’s a work in progress, just like the acting. You just … keep showing up, and you refine yourself and you refine the work and the message you want to tell the people.”
Then, when asked if he has any other new skills or developments in the tanks, Brosnan, who has a new movie coming out, joked that he needs to write his memoirs because he’s getting old, saying: “I have to write the memoirs here. I hear myself telling the same old story, and I sound like some old goat.”
