Hunter Biden faces intense criticism from conservatives after holding a Capitol Hill press conference on Wednesday, refusing to sit for a deposition before Congress. Hunter defended himself and his father, alleging Joe Biden had no financial involvement in his business practices.
Following the press conference, which some labeled a “stunt,” many called for Hunter Biden to be held in contempt of Congress. In his monologue, Hunter absolved his father of any meaningful connection to his business dealings, claiming there is no evidence to support the assertions of Republicans investigating these accusations.
“Let me state as clearly as I can. My father was not financially involved in my business, not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma. Not my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not my investments at home nor abroad, and certainly not as an artist. There is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen,” Hunter said.
“There has already been a five year investigation yet. Here I am, Mr. Chairman, taking up your offer when you said we can bring these people in for depositions or committee hearings, whichever they choose, blood chosen. I am here to testify at a public hearing today to answer any of the committee’s legitimate questions,” he continued.
Hunter shifted the press conference to the topic of his well-documented drug addiction, where he admitted his financial responsibility. He seemed to suggest that his parents heavily supported him during this period of his life, but this offered no grounds for impeachment.
“And in the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances. But to suggest that as grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd. It’s shameless. There is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen. James Comer, Jim Jordan, Jason Smith, and their colleagues have distorted the facts by cherry picking lines,” the president’s son added. “Republicans do not want an open process where Americans can see their tactics, expose their baseless inquiry or hear what I have to say. What are they afraid of? I’m here I’m ready.”
“Hunter Biden refuses to comply with @JamesComer‘s subpoena to be deposed behind closed doors and demands a public hearing so he can tell sob stories on TV. Reminder that Don Jr. testified behind closed doors for over 40 hours about the Russia hoax. Hold him in contempt!” conservative commentator Greg Price posted on X.
“Hunter Biden, this ain’t Burger King. You can’t Have It Your Way when it comes to congressional subpoenas. Quit the stunts, make your way to the deposition room, and let’s talk.” stated Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds.
