Willie and Korie Robertson, made famous by AMC’s hit show “Duck Dynasty,” recently joined their daughter Sadie Robertson on her podcast, “WHOA That’s Good,” to discuss their Christian faith and how they have managed to maintain it throughout their marriage, even in difficult times.
Particularly, the two focused on how they managed to remain generous even when they were struggling financially, pointing to how they were able to look at the example of living in a Christian way set by their parents and then follow that, even when doing so was difficult.
Speaking on the matter, Kore Robertson said, “I would say I think that we were both really fortunate to be modeled that from our parents. Both of us had parents that lived different lives. He lived on the river. I lived in the neighborhood.” Continuing, she added, “We lived very differently, but generosity was very much at the root of both of our families.”
Korie then went on to add that they were fortunate in that “both of our families had homes that were very open.” That, in turn, was important because it set an example they could learn from, which is “the idea that people were much more important than things.”
That lesson evidently stuck, as according to Kore it was one that they were able to keep in mind even when they were a newlywed couple that was struggling financially. She said, “I think that even when we were newlyweds and first married, we had that example. So, we still lived very generously and also gratefulness even during that time period.”
Explaining her mindset about giving and how though there are times they have been less good about embodying Christian charity than at other times, but tried to remain faithful throughout, she said, “It’s kind of like what you really do with little; you will actually do with much. I think it’s really a truth. And not that we’ve ever been perfect in any of it or lived perfectly. There’s probably been seasons where we lived it out better than others. But, I think that we both had that at our core and our base because we saw that in our parents.”
Willie, for his part, spoke more about his family’s former poverty and financial hardship, saying, “I think everybody would agree that we were really poor. We just didn’t have a lot of money or things or anything as far as me and mom and dad and my brothers. So they’d come out of the hardship and then had big dreams and aspirations. Dad worked hard, mom worked hard, but there just wasn’t a lot of cash or money.”
Continuing, he spoke about how it is important to have “a heart of gratefulness” and “a heart of generosity,” which he said his parents imparted on him before he became famous and successful. He added, “I think that can be in your heart. But also, it’s a constant thing where you have to learn and put those actions into it. It’s a decision that you have to make, and I think you can grow in that.” Watch them here:
