Some of the relationships made in the political scene are getting weirder and weirder as certain aspects of the culture war intensify and draw in members of varying factions who have little in common generally, but much in common on certain issues that they find pressing. Such could be seen in the Capitol Rotunda recently, when Reps. Lauren Boebert and Anna Luna met and snapped a selfie with comedian Dave Chappelle.
During the quick gathering, the trio snapped a friendly selfie and Rep. Luna told Chappelle, “Thanks for all you do.” Little else appears to have happened on that front, though Rep. Boebert connecter her support of Chappelle with his stance on transgender individuals.
Rep. Boebert, captioning the photo in her post on X with it, said, “Just three people who understand that there’s only two genders 😄” Similarly, Rep. Luna posted the same photo on X. She captioned her copy by saying, “Ran into @DaveChappelle🤌🏼 .”
During his trip to the Capitol Rotunda, Chappelle was also seen greeting Rep. Byron Donalds. The two exchanged a bit of banter and shook hands after greeting each other, as was captured in a video that went viral on X. Watch that video here:
Chappelle was reportedly at the Capitol for a meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus. Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News, commenting on his arrival in a post on X, said, “DAVE CHAPELLE is in the Capitol. He was here for a cbc meeting.”
Replying, one commenter joked that it would be hard to stay serious with Chappelle around, writing, “You won’t believe it! DAVE CHAPELLE showed up at the Capitol for a meeting. It’s like when your funniest uncle pops in during a serious family thing. Imagine laughter in the serious government place—that’s pretty cool! 😄🎤”
Chappelle, however, gave a different explanation. He said that he made the visit because he has friends on Capitol Hill and wanted to visit them, saying, “A lot of the people I grew up with work on the hill, so I hang out here sometimes when I’m in DC, to catch up with old friends.” He added, when asked if he had any business there, “Well, I’ll tell you what I didn’t come to do: be on television.” Watch him discuss that here:
That comment was confirmed by a spokesperson who told the Washington Examiner that Mr. Chappelle was not in the Capitol on any official business and did not attend any meetings during his visit, but was instead just visiting to say hello to a few friends and people with whom he has developed professional working relationships over the years, both staffers on the Hill and lawmakers. Continuing, the spokesperson said that Chappelle was visiting D.C. for the Kennedy Center Honors and an event in which he is participating at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
