Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama is the former football coach who turned into one of the few conservative senators who remains focused on advancing the conservative agenda his ruby red constituents want, a pleasant surprise to those who thought he was coasting on his past fame and would be yet another spaghetti spined senator. He’s remained particularly vocal about the state of the military and the Biden border crisis.
Speaking about what the military should be used for and the danger in having a mostly open, or at least porous, border at a time when we have so many committed enemies abroad, Sen. Tuberville told Newsmax’s Eric Bolling that the open border could lead to frequent terror attacks.
Beginning, Sen. Tuberville argued that when Hamas’ October 7th surprise attack on Israel occurred, the Biden Administration should have been finally shocked into action and sent the military to defend the border to prevent such attacks from happening in America.
Making that argument, he said, “When that happened, Joe Biden should’ve woke up and called [Defense] Secretary [Lloyd] Austin and said, ‘Ok, send every available military personnel to the border immediately. Close it down. Nobody else comes in.‘”
Continuing, Sen. Tuberville then argued that the flood tide of migrants coming across the border could contain members of terror groups, thus leading to frequent terror attacks on American soil that could have been prevented had the border been adequately defended.
He said, “We’re gonna have a 9/11 attack every few weeks if we don’t watch it. It is out of control. But this group could care less. You know, being a senator, you know, I’m not a senator. I was an educator and I’m up here watching what’s going on and I’m thinking, you know, who cares? Who cares about the American people? Who cares about the taxpayers of this country? I can’t find anybody on both sides of the aisle. It’s about spending damn money and I’m sick of it.”
Watch Sen. Tuberville discuss the issue here:
The Biden Administration has remained mostly unconcerned about the potential terror threat posed by border crossers. One Biden official, speaking to the New York Times in a recent interview, played down the issue, saying, “In most of these cases, it’s ultimately determined through further investigation that there is no connection with terrorism and that individual.”
The GOP, however, has remained focused on the issue. Sen. Capito of West Virginia, for example, signed onto a letter saying, “Our Southern border is a matter of deep national concern and insecurity. With rising violence and economic crises around the world pushing many people towards our borders, the record levels of illegal crossings and the spike in Border Patrol apprehensions of individuals matching the U.S. terror watchlist are alarming. In fiscal year 2023 alone, 169 migrants with positive terrorism watchlist matches were apprehended along our Southern border. This represents a tenfold increase from the figures reported in fiscal year 2021.“
That letter added, “Although the exact affiliations and identities of these individuals remain classified, the marked increase is alarming. Even if these apprehensions represent a minority, the potential devastation from a single individual with malign intentions cannot be overstated.”
