With the Biden border crisis continuing despite claims from the administration that it is acting to secure the border and stop the flow of fentanyl into the country, sanctuary states and cities are getting a bigger dose of illegal immigration than they bargained for, as shown by New York City’s struggle with illegal immigration. Now another city is in the news for much the same issue, with seven migrants to the sanctuary state going on a shoplifting spree over the Thanksgiving weekend.
All seven of the border crossers were originally from Venezuela, a state from where many have fled due to the incompetence and corruption of the Maduro regime. These seven, however, allegedly committed crimes instead of “enriching” America.
The first of the incidents occurred a bit before Thanksgiving, on November 16. Then, two young Venezuelan migrants, 18-year-old Neikis Yeimily Salazar and 23-year-old Alexander Saul Martinez Lima, were both charged with felony retail theft after they allegedly stole Christmas items from a Deerfield, Illinois Hobby Lobby.
The duo allegedly stole nearly $900 of goods, enough to fill two shopping carts. Police officers responded to the scene of the crime and, though Lima and Salazar were pushing the carts to a nearby motel, were able to recover the allegedly stolen goods and arrest to two alleged shoplifters.
A separate incident occurred in Elmhurst, Illinois. There, three Venezuelan migrants, 37-year-old Ilys Mary Ledesma Zapata, 21-year-old Christian Johan Saavedra-Omona, and 33-year-old Braud Pineda Avendano, allegedly shoplifted about $500 worth of goods from a Kohl’s store. Police were able to rescue that trio as well.
Unfortunately, however, all three were released from jail shortly after their arrests despite the prosecutors for DuPage County arguing that they were a flight risk and so needed to be detained. They’re due back in court in mid-December. Salazar and Lima were both also released from jail shortly after they were arrested and are due back in court in late December.
Joining Zapata, Saavedra-Omona, and Avendano in getting arrested for shoplifting in DuPage County were two other Venezuelan migrants, 27-year-old Lenguieyer Guevara-Muro and 20-year-old Jinder Moises Angulo-Aparicio. They were allegedly shoplifting at a Macy’s store in the area and were each charged with one count of felony burglary and one count of retail theft after allegedly shoplifting at a Macy’s store.
They attempted to steal about $800 worth of goods from the Macy’s store, filling a foil-lined bag with stolen items. They were approached by officers shortly afterward and detained, with Guevara-Muro having to be brought to the ground by an officer because he resisted arrest.
Commenting on the incident after the second collection of Venezuelan migrant shoplifters was arrested in his county, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, “For the second day in a row, my office has filed charges against individuals from Venezuela accused of stealing merchandise from a retail store.“
