Florida GOP Sen. Rick Scott was uninvited from a Republican leadership press conference on Tuesday. This comes after the senator announced he would be challenging Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.
Scott announced his run against McConnell, stating:
“I’m writing to you today because I believe it’s time for the Senate Republican Conference to be far more bold and resolute than we have been in the past. We must start saying what we are for, not just what we are against.”
“I do not believe we can simply continue to say the Democrats are radical, which they are. Republican voters expect and deserve to know our plan to promote and advance conservative values.”
Rick Scott is a member of the Senate GOP leadership team and he usually appears alongside McConnell and other GOP leaders at news conferences. Scott claims that McConnell’s team intentionally uninvited him due to his challenge.
Sen. Scott is playing off a wave of frustration with establishment Republicans who have offered no platform for voters.
As Scott points out, Republicans like McConnell spend all of their political capital on pushing tax cuts, which don’t get me wrong are great, and calling the Dems radical.
They don’t actually offer many solutions on real issues that voters care about. In turn, the best they can do politically is slow down the advancement of Democrats.
As a result, the political goalposts continue to move farther left and many establishment Republicans now basically hold the same values as a mid-2000s Democrat under Obama.
The MAGA movement, however, is a breath of fresh air for many Republican voters, as it offers an actual plan to fight for conservative values.
Demonstrating the yearning for MAGA-oriented Republican politicians, Mitch McConnell’s favorability ratings have plummeted to a record low.
Now just 7% of Americans view McConnell favorably, with just 18% of Republicans viewing him favorably.
Former President Donald Trump, who just announced his re-election bid for 2024, shredded McConnell recently, stating:
“…Mitch McConnell, the Republicans Broken Down Senate Leader, does nothing about this. He’s too busy spending vast amounts of money on bad Senator Lisa M of Alaska, when Kelly S is FAR better. Should have fought and stopped the steal in 2020. Gave Dems 4 Trillion Dollars, never used Debt Ceiling. He is the WORST!”
“It’s Mitch McConnell’s fault. Spending money to defeat great Republican candidates instead of backing Blake Masters and others was a big mistake. Giving 4 Trillion Dollars to the Radical Left for the Green New Deal, not Infrastructure, was an even bigger mistake. He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him and his otherwise lovely wife, Coco Chow!”
Despite this palpable frustration toward McConnell, it could be a challenge to unseat him as he does have allies and it requires only a simple majority of support to retain the leadership position.
McConnell assured that he would retain power, claiming:
“I have the votes. I will be elected. The only issue is whether we do it sooner or later. And we’ll probably have another discussion about that.”
