USNWT soccer player and professional agitator Megan Rapinoe played the last game of her career over the weekend, and it didn’t end well. Only a few minutes in, the privileged activist reported feeling a “pop” in her heel and had to leave the pitch for the last time.
The injury occurred during the game between her club, OL Reign, and FC Gotham, in which Rapinoe’s club lost 2-1. FC Gotham went on to win the National Women’s Soccer League trophy. During the post-match presser, Rapinoe said this: “Everyone is always like, ‘Who kicked me?’ And obviously, no one was even around me, and I was pressing. That’s what it felt like. Just a huge pop and I can’t even feel where the Achilles is, but pretty sure I tore my Achilles. The worst possible outcome.”
Achilles injuries are not uncommon for older players who have perhaps played beyond their shelf-life. After all, NFL legends Dan Marino and Aaron Rodgers both ripped their Achilles tendons very late in their careers. For Rapinoe, it was an inglorious end to a bombastic career for one of the most misguided, outspoken characters in any sport’s history.
While the contest likely went unnoticed by most sports fans, however, what hasn’t gone unnoticed was the way Rapinoe dealt with the injury in the aftermath. Never one to simply go quietly into that good night, the controversial former player chose to blaspheme God when talking about her injury.
Whether she was being flippant or not matters little. Her reputation proceeds her and with likable stars like C.J. Stroud of the NFL Houston Texans, numerous members of the upstart Baltimore Orioles, and players like Brandon Pfaadt of the World Series Arizona Diamondbacks, who was seen reading his Bible in the dugout, it is clear that God is making a fourth-quarter comeback in sports.
Rapinoe went on to say in the post-match presser: “I’m not a religious person or anything and if there was a God, like, this is proof that there isn’t. This is f—-d up. It’s just f—-d up. Six minutes in, and I eat my Achilles.”
The level of narcissism in Rapinoe’s comment didn’t go unnoticed on social media. Former NFL quarterback Devlin “Duck” Hodges weighed in on X by saying: “Wow. For those seeing this. Just know there is a God and he has wonderful plans for those that believe in him!”
Hodges, whose biggest accomplishment is being the boyfriend of country superstar Lainey Wilson, wasn’t alone in his criticism of Rapinoe’s comments. Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele said that Rapinoe’s comments were “narcissism at its finest.”
Social media echoed Duck’s sentiments. One commenter wrote: “Duck stacking those W’s” while yet another said, “A common duck W!!” While Duck didn’t stack very many wins during his short NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Rams, he was widely loved because of his enthusiasm and personality. His most recent comments in defense of God certainly won’t cost him any fans.
Hopefully, Megan Rapinoe can fade into the ether and be forgotten. Though her shenanigans, like kneeling during the anthem, criticizing America, supporting biological men in women’s sports, and whining for equal pay with the men despite not selling an equal amount of tickets, won’t go away soon, perhaps solid citizens and people of God like C.J. Stroud can provide a much-needed palate cleanse for the sports world.
