Just when you thought it was safe to watch soccer, Megan Rapinoe once again flips the script. The anthem-protesting, left-wing agitator created a stir over the weekend after suffering a non-contact injury in her last professional soccer game.
The outspoken activist suffered the injury just three minutes into the match against Gotham FC, and her night and career ended much more quietly than her recent career sounded. While it wasn’t clear what type of injury she suffered, after the game, she said: “Pretty sure I tore my Achilles, so the worst possible outcome. I mean, just obviously devastating to go out in a final so early. I know it’s my last game and that is devastating as well, but to go out so early, that also changes things. It takes a sub off a bench. Taking one of your best players off the field is not ideal.”
Always humble, referring to herself as one of the best on the field despite her age and clearly declining level of play, the grating Rapinoe continued: “I guess I just rode it till the wheels really came right off. You don’t always get to have the perfect ending.”
Beyond Rapinoe’s self-aggrandizing praise of her career, it was other comments she made in the post-match presser that raised eyebrows and ruffled feathers of soccer and non-soccer fans. As the Trump-hating ex-soccer star spoke at the press conference, she said: “I mean, I don’t deserve this, I’ll tell you that much. I’m not a religious person or anything, but if there is a God, this is proof that there isn’t.”
Whether she was being flippant or not matters little. The arrogance and bombast of a statement that implies that there is no God simply because you got hurt on the soccer pitch is not a statement that is going to endear you to most folks.
Rapinoe had a decorated, storied career marked with numerous awards and accomplishments. She spent the latter part of her career stumping for more money for female players and pushing numerous radical agendas, including allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports.
Social media did what social media does so well, as Rapinoe’s pity party was not well-received, with many on X calling out her comments. One commenter said: “Somewhere there’s a little girl who plays at a Catholic school and idolized her. That sucks,” while another lamented, “With all that’s happening in the world, this is what she comes up with? Poor thing.”
Among the more pointed responses were: “Just sad that someone can be so lost. Especially when they are given a platform and opportunity to reach others,” and a very short, succinct, and to-the-point reply, “A loser in so many ways.”
Megan Rapinoe has lived a privileged life. She has been paid well to play a child’s game and has been given a powerful platform. Unfortunately, she has mostly used that platform to push her own ideology and take potshots at the country that gave her the attention she sought.
Soccer fans can rejoice that they no longer have to watch her on the pitch, and while no real sports fan wishes injury on anyone competing, it’s fair to say that many can agree that her career ended in a fitting fashion.
