Buddy Valastro is the star of the hit baking show “Cake Boss,” and he is preparing for the next generation of Cake Bosses to come up as his kids begin to reach the age of possibly working in his bakery. Valastro shared his ideas for how to raise his kids in the baking world and how to make them earn their place, even though they may be working for their father.
Valastro spoke about a quandary that so many parents have in America. He wants to use his wealth to give his children the best life possible, but he also doesn’t want to spoil them to the point that they do not learn the virtues of hard work or live a fulfilled life.
In order to raise his children to be hardworking and respectful adults, Valastro has taken certain steps to ensure that the values that allowed him to reach the top of the cake game are not lost on his offspring. He spoke about this in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Valastro said, “My kids are truly blessed, and they do live a pampered lifestyle because of the way I live. But the thing is, how do you make them responsible? How do you keep them grounded? When people meet my kids, a lot of times they’re like, ‘They’re so down to earth. They’re so good.’”
The answer? Valastro is teaching his children how to work and, along with that, how to earn respect.
He continued, “And I take that as me and my wife doing our job in raising them. And that means they do come and work at the factory. They don’t have to come into the business. It’s totally up to them what they want to do. But they have to learn responsibility. … The best respect is earned respect.”
Valastro understands that his wealth and talent in both the kitchen and on-screen will not translate to respect for his children. So, he set about putting them into positions to earn their own. He said, “When people in my factory see my kids on their hands and knees scrubbing the floors, they have respect for them. That’s respect that they’re not going to get just because they’re my kids.”
Valastro also explained that this practice of hard work isn’t only about helping his kids earn respect of their own. He also hopes that it teaches them to respect other folks who do those jobs day in and day out. He hopes that his children will have an intimate understanding of the lives of blue-collar workers.
He explained, “When you do the job, and you clean the toilets, you scrub the racks or you clean the floor drains, you have a lot more respect for the person who does it every day. That’s what my dad taught me, and I still practice that to this day. And I need to emphasize that to my kids.”
Valastro’s new show “Cake Dynasty” Premiers on November 11, tune in to see him work.
