Though Florida is well-governed and generally run by the sane, unlike many less fortunate states in the union, it still has to deal with some of the crime issues that the rest of the country is facing as well, namely brazen violence against productive, law-abiding citizens by those with no respect for the law or care for their fellow Americans.
Such could be seen in an incident from a Walmart in Broward County, Florida, from which the Broward County Sheriff’s Office recently released stomach-churning surveillance footage in an attempt to help with finding the perp. In that incident, an elderly man leaving the Walmart was randomly approached and attacked by an as-yet unidentified assaulter.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Department, commenting on the matter in a press release, said, “It was a brazen, unprovoked attack caught on camera – an elderly man exiting a store in Lauderdale Lakes is approached by a stranger and punched twice in the face. Now, Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit detectives want to find the attacker.”
Continuing, the press release added, “According to detectives, the battery occurred just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Walmart store, located at 3001 N. State Road 7. Surveillance video shows an elderly man exiting the store with a shopping bag in his hand. As he gets past the first set of sliding doors, the subject punches the victim in the face. Detectives say the subject is a tall, thin male wearing a navy sweater with grey lettering on the front, black pants and flip flops. The attacker then turns and leaves the entryway to the store, heading north towards Oakland Park Boulevard on foot.”
Even more disturbing is that the incident was pure violence. The perpetrator took nothing from the elderly man whom he attacked, and the victim claims he does not know the victim nor did he even speak to him before the incident. As he put it, “Detectives say the attacker did not steal anything from the victim, and the victim does not know the attacker and did not have words with him prior to the incident. The victim sustained minor injuries.”
The office then asked the public for help in identifying the perpetrator, saying, “Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of the individual who committed this crime is asked to contact BSO Violent Crimes Unit detective Jennifer Petrofsky at 954-321-4238 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch app. If tipsters wish to remain anonymous, they can contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at browardcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters can also dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.”

Though the department has been unable to catch the perp in the Walmart incident, it did recently announce it had arrested and charged the perpetrator of another assault in a local business, saying, “Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit arrested Dwayne Fye on charges related to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The arrest came a day after investigators released surveillance video of an altercation Fye was involved in at a business in Broward County.”
Describing the incident, it added, “The incident occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3, near the 2700 block of West Sunrise Boulevard. When BSO deputies responded, the victim told investigators that an unknown subject around 6 feet tall with a slim build and a bald head had attempted to exit the store without paying for a beer. In the surveillance video, released to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 31, a subject is seen wearing a green baseball hat, green shirt and black shorts entering the store. The individual then walks directly toward the back of the store where the beverages are and removes a beer from the refrigerator aisle. The subject then walks back to the front of the store, where he and the victim have a verbal exchange. In the video, you can see the subject place the beer can on the counter before poking the victim several times in the chest. The subject is then seen exiting the store. Detectives say the verbal dispute continued outside and that the subject threatened the victim with a knife before leaving the premises. According to the victim, approximately 5 to 10 minutes later, the subject returned to the business. Another verbal altercation ensued, and the subject displayed a gun. Surveillance video captures the subject entering the business a second time wearing a black baseball cap, black shirt and shorts.”
