On Friday, in South Shore, Chicago, a robbery attempt was thwarted by an employee with a concealed carry license.
This comes amid Chicago’s city-wide exodus of businesses due to rampant crime.
The suspected robber and a grocery store clerk are dead following the attempted robbery.
According to CBS News, all of this happened in the El Barakah Supermarket on 73rd Street.
Police identified the would-be robber to be Nicholas Williams, a 24-year-old.
Police say that the suspect entered the store and drew his gun to point it at a 64-year-old store clerk named Ali Hassan.
Witnesses say they heard four shots fired in the building, two consecutive shots followed by a pause before the other two shots rang off.
According to police, the robber was hit in the chest and ran from the store. He was later found dead outside.
Before being stopped, the robber fired two shots at Hassan, one hitting him in the back and one in the chest.
According to police, Hassan was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center but was later pronounced dead due to his wounds.
In a report by ABC7 Chicago, neighbors and family spoke about Ali Hassan’s impact on his community.
ABC7 interviewed Hassan’s nephew, Khalid Hassan, who had this to say about his uncle.
My uncle Ali, I look up to him as a role model, as a standup human being. Part of the reason of who I am today is because of him.
He’s the most standup guy, caring guy. He cared. If you were around him, he always had good energy, always a positive individual.
Investigators say that the robbery was thwarted by another family member who works at the store and owns a valid firearm owner’s ID and concealed carry license holder.
This comes amid a fight in liberal cities like Chicago to ban the concealed carry of handguns in public places.
In Oregon, for example, a stricter set of gun laws passed during this election cycle in the form of measure 114.
According to the ballot initiative which passed, new firearm restrictions are put in place for anyone in the state of Oregon.
The bill requires residents to acquire a permit to purchase firearms in the state, which can only be paid for and received once a person has subjected themselves to a background check and completed a training course on gun safety, among other things.
This robbery gone wrong in Chicago should serve as a warning to liberal states which wish to lessen the number of legal guns on the street.
Though this event was a tragedy, it would have only been worse had there been no good guy with a gun in the building.
While these restrictive gun laws are passed out of fear for law-abiding firearm owners, it is important for Americans to remember that those same firearm owners are often the only line of defense against criminals, while the police make their way to the scene.
