A plus-sized social media influencer who had previously demanded airlines give free extra seats to overweight passengers has taken things one step further. Jaelynn Chaney, the social media personality behind the huge ask, is on a mission to change the travel industry, one hallway at a time.
In a video posted to her TikTok account, Chaney listed several ways hotels can create what she calls ‘size-inclusive” amenities. Not only does Chaney want a free airplane seat, but she also wants hotels to raise toilet seats and retrofit rooms with handheld shower heads for those hard-to-reach places. Additionally, she wants handrails in pools and sturdier, wider poolside chairs built to accommodate larger posteriors.
She claimed: “The needs of plus-sized travelers matter just as much as anybody else. We deserve an environment that respects our needs and body diversity.” Amongst the most untenable demands involve elevators. Chaney wants hotels to retrofit and reinstall elevators meant to accommodate larger people. Her wish is for hotels to “make elevators and hallways [more] spacious, to allow for easy movement of larger individuals, and those utilizing mobility devices.”
While it is understandable that folks with real mobility issues might need more space, laws are already in place in most locales to ensure those accommodations are available. Chaney continued: “Hotels should provide size-inclusive bathrooms. These should go up to size 6X and beyond.” She also wants hotel staff to be retrained to properly handle the special needs of larger people, claiming establishments need to, “train staff to be respectful, understanding and accommodating to travelers of all sizes. Creating a space where every guest feels valued and comfortable is essential.”
Chaney rounded out her complaints and demands thusly: “Size-inclusive hotel amenities are more than just accommodations — they’re a statement of respect for diverse needs and body type. From spacious chairs to thoughtful bathroom facilities, every detail matters. Let’s make travel truly accessible and welcoming for travelers of all sizes and abilities.”
Naturally, reactions on social media were mixed, at best. One supportive but skeptical person wrote: “I agree this is ideal, but some of these are out of the hotel’s control — lift size for example.” Others were much more savage: “How are you gonna ask for things to change, but refuse to change yourself?” obviously referring to Chaney’s size and her inability or unwillingness to lose weight herself.
Another woman wrote: “I am fat and I will let no airline or hotel pay for my eating habits,” while yet another said: “Imagine feeling so entitled to demand that an entire industry accommodate your inability to put down the fork.”
In the end, Chaney is likely making waves to increase her social media presence and the size of her TikTok following. Chaney labels herself as a “Plus Size Travel, Fashion & Lifestyle” creator and has more than 134,000 followers on TikTok. However, the old idiom that any publicity is good publicity is true, so the resulting attention, while affecting zero change, is likely to gain her followers. Watch her here:
