A man with 66 prior arrests shot and killed a Tennessee business man. Christopher Wright was on his way to attend the 20th reunion of his High School’s graduating class when the attack occurred in downtown Chattanooga Tennessee.
57-year-old Darryl Roberts was arrested for the homicide of Christopher Wright, according to the Chattanoogan. The fugitive department of the Chatanooga police department worked in concert with United State Marshalls to follow Wright until marked police elements were able to execute an arrest on the man with prior arrests. Roberts was taken into custody due to related outstanding warrants.
Roberts is being charged with first degree murder. Police detailed the events as best they could, saying that an argument escalated until Roberts decided to shoot Wright. When police finally responded to reports of a person shot, they found Wright on the ground with what would end up being a fatal gunshot wound.
According to the Chattanoogan and police reports that they obtained, the altercation was quick. Roberts and another male were talking when Wright walked past and apparently took issue with something that was said between the group. he turned and said something, then continued walking. Then, about thirty feet further away, Wright again turned and said something else.
Apparently, whatever he said inured Robert’s feelings enough that he felt it right to end the life of another man. Police say he can be seen drawing a weapon as he moved toward Wright before shooting him fatally in the head. Roberts is being held on $5 million bond.
The Baylor School, where Wright graduated from twenty years ago and where he was heading to meet his former classmates, was shaken by the news. School president Chris Angel released a statement on behalf of the school, mourning the loss of one of its alumni.
Angel wrote, “The Baylor School community is heartbroken to learn of the sudden death of Christopher Wright ’03, who would have celebrated his 20th class reunion this weekend with his fellow classmates. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and his family for their devastating loss.”
Tim Kelly, mayor of Chattanooga, Tennessee, released a statement as well. In it, he made it clear the the government of Chattanooga will not stand for this level of violence and will be taking measure to make a reoccurrence of events like this less likely.
He said, ““The sad reality is that sometimes proactive policing only goes so far, particularly when you’re dealing with the kind of person who would commit a murderous act of apparent rage in front of witnesses on the steps of his own apartment building under the blue light of a well-known public safety camera.”
