As inflation continues rearing its ugly head, America has trouble exerting its will abroad, the military looks decidedly less competent, the economy less strong than it used to be, and issues like illegal immigration and the fentanyl crisis rage, many Americans are looking for someone or something to blame and have settled on “coastal elites.”
Such is what Democratic strategist James Carville noted during a recent discussion with Bill Maher about Democrat election prospects heading into 2024. In the interview, Carville, himself no populist, blasted the “coastal arrogance” of those in charge of the Democratic Party. Particularly, he noted that the coastal far left opposes values Americans support, which then makes it very unpopular with the common American.
Making that point, Carville told Maher, “There’s a certain coastal arrogance in this country and people feel it. The western far left is habitually the most stupid, naive people you can imagine. They come up with these really goofy constructs and it’s all about feeling.. Feeling good about yourself? Yeah.”
Maher, himself no conservative, agreed and gave an example, noting that the coastal elite crowd is even against free speech, once a value cherished by all Americans. He said, “And just feeling as opposed to, like, free speech. Like, if your feelings are hurt, that’s more important than free speech.”
Carville noted that the “overeducated” elites generally infuriate normal people, saying, “Most people don’t even know what they’re talking about. Overeducated, cultural, white people got a hold to the word. And if they do everything else, they completely f*ck it up. and piss everybody in the country off.”
Maher, in response, said, “Now you’re speaking my language.” Carville, returning to his point about idiotic ideas coming out of colleges, said, “And if we just could get the humanities faculty at Amherst to shut up, we’d be a lot better off.“
That was enough to get Fox News to praise Carville and Maher, despite Fox News generally being considered part of the same “coastal elite” crowd, though on the nominally conservative side of the Uniparty, with Lawrence Jones reacting to Carville’s message by saying “So good!” and Steve Doocy adding “Wow, that was excellent!”
Maher, during the discussion, also said that Biden could lose to Trump because he is so senile and unable to conduct himself, saying, “He will lose because at some point perception becomes reality. He cannot run for president, he’ll look bad in the debates.” Maher added, “He will be Ruth Bader Biden —it’s not a good look.”
Maher is no conservative, and in fact stands against much of what conservatives stand for, often mocking conservative viewpoints mercilessly. But, as shown by the Carville interview, he is at least willing to support free speech and not wholly swallow leftist ideas hook, line, and sinker, particularly now that he thinks the progressive movement he used to wholeheartedly support went too far.
