Matt Gaetz thoroughly enjoyed his time talking to CNN’s senior political correspondent Abby Phillip as she stumbled through a biased explanation of a recent floor vote during her interview with the Republican representative.
Phillip started the interaction, incorrectly saying, “You did vote against the defense appropriations bill this week…that…the rule to advance…” That was promptly shut down by the eager Gaetz, who said, “No, I didn’t. Abby, this is going to be a very embarrassing moment when the internet corrects you on this, I voted for the defense rule both times.”
Hilariously, and likely the wise choice, Phillip decided to back down from her factually incorrect assertion. While it is rare to see members of the mainstream media back down from their claims, she cowered from the camera and said, “I stand corrected.”
Rep. Gaetz has been in the media recently for his refusal to backdown when questioning the Biden administrations handling of negotiations with China. In a recent hearing, he posed the hard-hitting question, “Are you saying that North Korea has the same malign influence risk to the United States as the Chinese Communist Party. Because here’s what it looks like. It looks like the Chinese gave all this money to the Bidens and then you guys came in and got rid of the China initiative and it was successful. I saw one rationale that you guys got rid of the China initiative because it was racial profiling.”
Merrick Garland, the subject of the hearing, fired back, saying, “There are a lot of questions that you just asked. Let me start with the first one about North Korea. North Korea is a dangerous actor, both kinetically and with respect to cyber.”
After a bit more contention over whether or not Garland would answer anything with respect to North Korea. Understanding that the North Korea issue is simply used to distract the public from more pressing issues surrounding US relations with China, he said, “I already know the answer, and so does everyone. They’re not the same risk as China. So let’s get on to serious questions and serious answers. Do you know about the money that moved through Rob Walker’ shell companies, yes or no?”
Gaetz later shifted his ire toward the government’s handling of the January 6 investigations, saying, “I want you to answer this question. I only get 5 minutes. You’ve already sort of I think screwed the pooch on China. On January 6th, did you lose count of the number of federal assets? Did you lose count and order an audit?”
Gaetz’s most recent victory against CNN shows that fighting back and never retreating is the best way for right-wing politicians to handle their battle against the leftist media. Hopefully, this showing from Gaetz will continue to embolden more of his colleagues to join his cause.
