Mark Wahlberg is known for many things and roles, from his time in hip-hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch to his starring roles in blockbuster movies like “The Other Guys” and “Daddy’s Home.” But one of Wahlberg’s traits for which he has become most famous is his strong dedication to his Christian faith, an aspect of his life about which he is very open.
He recently spoke about his faith in an interview with Cigar Aficionado, saying that he is always trying to be “a better servant of God” and that he does his utmost to remember all the many aspects of his life for which he knows he should be grateful.
Speaking on those matters, Wahlberg said, “Well look, when I open my eyes I have a lot to be grateful for.” He added, “So first and foremost I express my gratitude, and then I have a reminder of all the things that I need to do to continue to grow to be a better person, to be a better servant of God, to be a better father, to be a better husband.”
He also spoke about his first critical hit, the 1997 film Boogie Nights, which is a movie about the pornography business. Commenting on that role and why it made him stop and think, he said, “I came from the whole Marky Mark thing, pulling down my pants, Calvin Klein underwear — I didn’t know if this was just the next level of exploiting me and now all of a sudden we have to lose the underwear.” He added, “I was like, ‘This could be something great, or this could be absolutely terrible.’”
Continuing, he spoke about why he decided to become a producer, saying, “I didn’t want to sit around waiting for Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise or whoever … to go and pass on a movie until I could get my hands on it.” He then added that he was always proactive in order to “create [his] own destiny.” Relatedly, when asked about what life goals he has left to accomplish, the Christian actor said, “Direct. Working with some of the other great talents. Working with the next batch of great talent.”
Wahlberg’s comments on his faith in this interview are similar to what he has said in past interviews. In one with Fox News, for example, he said, “I attribute everything good and everything positive in life to my faith. As soon as I started putting my faith and focus on God, good things started happening for me.”
Continuing, he added, “And even when they didn’t, it gives you the coping skills to deal with things that are inevitable, like loss and failure and those things. But, you know, again, my faith and my family, those are the most important aspects of my life.”
