Following a teen experiencing flu-like symptoms this summer, a family was forced to make a call to have the boy’s feet and hands amputated to save his life. Mathias Uribe was rushed to the hospital on June 30 after multiple trips to doctors for flu-like symptoms. He was in cardiac arrest when he arrived at the emergency room.
A fundraiser on GoFundMe was made on behalf of the Uribe family and briefly detailed the struggles that they are facing following the tragedy. According to the family, the creator of the fundraiser, “On June 30th our world fell apart. He was taken to the emergency room where his heart stopped and went into cardiac arrest. He needed life-saving support and was flown to two different hospitals. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.”
She noted that the family has remained strong in its Faith and trust in God and that the family believes that He will provide for them. The fundraiser is designed to help the family afford the hospital stay and the associated costs of food and travel that they will incur while Urias continues to battle.
They wrote, “He is currently in the ICU receiving treatment at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where we were told he was the sickest child admitted at the time.”
After numerous donations, the fundraiser has already exceeded the halfway mark of its $500,000 goal and is continuing to provide even more financial resources to the family of Mathias Uribe.
The post goes on in great detail about the condition that the boy is in and the many diagnoses that he has been given by doctors and specialists in recent days. The family also celebrated Mathias’ character, saying, “Our brilliant, 14-year-old son is a fighter. Our son has always been a happy, tender, loving boy, who touches the heart of everyone around him. At school, he has always excelled, and his teachers always have nothing but praise for his work ethic and eagerness to learn and go above and beyond both inside and outside the classroom.”
The family also dropped in the news that many did not want to hear, saying, “his extremities did not receive enough blood flow. For this reason, after speaking to his medical team and after exhausting all options on Friday, July 21st the medical team made the difficult decision to amputate his left leg below the knee.”
The Uribe family makes constant reference to God in the post, thanking him for the work that he has already done to save their son’s life and now asking followers, donators, and anyone else who sees their son’s plight to continue praying for the boy and his family.
They closed, saying, “Thank you for all your prayers, your understanding, compassion, and continued support. We are eternally grateful to every one of you. OUR FAITH IS BIGGER THAN OUR FEARS.”
