Recently, Democratic leaders in blue states have expressed frustration with President Biden as tensions mount from the inflow of illegal immigrants. Republicans in border states, such as Texas and Florida, have led campaigns in the last year to ship migrants to liberal-governed areas to share the burden and hopefully force substantive action at the federal level.
For example, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois slammed the Biden administration for not responding to his inquiries. Chicago has been a targeted city of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s migrant busing program. “I wrote to him in May, so it’s been like four months. But I hope to find out,” Durbin said recently.
Top businesses in New York City also pleaded with Biden and Congress to provide more federal assistance in an open letter. Major companies such as JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs backed a request spearheaded by NY Gov. Kathy Hochul, who cited a need for federal funding to offset the exorbitant local and state costs they are incurring.
“We write to support the request made by New York Governor Hochul for federal funding for educational, housing, security, and health care services to offset the costs that local and state governments are incurring with limited federal aid,” the group claimed.
Many democrats in these blue states are petitioning for the federal government to provide work permits for the illegal immigrants who have been bused to their localities. This would theoretically allow them to provide for themselves instead of relying on taxpayer dollars.
“We need people to have the right to work, which is an American tradition. We need an emergency declaration,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated. “We need locations to deal with the overflow right now, and we need funding. And so when you look at an analysis that was given, it answered none of those prevention, this is the intervention, what you saw. How do we stop this flow?”
The American Tribune reported late last year on Gov. Abbott’s initiatives to bus migrants to sanctuary cities nationwide. According to Abbott, the program has led to “much-needed” relief for border communities that are facing a crisis from “reckless open border policies.” The Republican Governor called out the Biden Administration to perform its duty in providing sufficient security at the southern border in a statement:
“Since April, Texas’ busing strategy has successfully provided much-needed relief to our border communities overwhelmed by the historic influx of migrants caused by President Biden’s reckless open border policies. Until the Biden Administration does its job and provides Texans and the American people with sustainable border security, Texas will continue doing more than any other state in the nation’s history to defend against an invasion along the border, including adding more sanctuary cities like Philadelphia as drop-off locations for our busing strategy.”
Greg Abbott’s busing program appears to be working as intended. Now that liberals in “sanctuary cities” and blue states are experiencing some of the difficulties of border states, they hopefully will continue to push the Biden administration to take action.
