Cancel culture is the primary tool in the leftist’s toolkit. It used to be that cancellation was saved for members of the opposite political party, sexual offenders, or anyone who strayed from the mainstream political narrative. Now, as always happens, the left is turning on and consuming itself as numerous liberals have fallen prey to their own ideology.
There have been multiple attempts to cancel high-profile entertainers like Joe Rogan, Dave Chapelle, James Franco, Lizzo, and many others. None of these people identify as conservatives, but all have run afoul of the woke mob and been attacked in kind.
As time passes, more people realize how destructive and antithetical to common sense cancellation is. After all, the left promotes itself as the party of tolerance, yet second chances are rarely offered. One of Hollywood’s biggest stars recently feared she ran afoul of the woke mob during a recent interview.
Jennifer Aniston, arguably the biggest female star of the 90s and a big-ticket actress, made some statements in a recent interview that shouldn’t be controversial but sadly to the left likely are. The 54-year-old star was discussing Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced and jailed movie producer responsible for the #metoo movement.
While she didn’t defend Weinstein, she also didn’t accuse him of anything and made a shocking contrast between him and other cancellation victims. She said: “I’m so over cancel culture. I probably just got canceled by saying that. I just don’t understand what it means … Is there no redemption? I don’t know. I don’t put everybody in the Harvey Weinstein basket.”
That would be a very big basket considering the litany of victims and crimes Weinstein ultimately went to prison for. The disgraced movie mogul is currently serving 39 years behind bars after convictions in New York and California.
However, Aniston never had any run-ins with Weinstein, though she recalls not being exactly thrilled about seeing him. She continued: “He’s not a guy, you’re like, ‘God, I can’t wait to hang out with Harvey [Weinstein],’ Never. You were actually like, ‘Oh, God, OK, suck it up.’ I remember actually, he came to visit me on a movie to pitch me a movie. And I do remember consciously having a person stay in my trailer.”
For Weinstein’s part, he claimed Aniston “never had any uncomfortable instances with me” despite media reports that he made inappropriate physical contact with the “Horrible Bosses” star. Aniston’s reps were quick to dispute the claims at the time, saying: “claims are false. Jennifer has not been harassed or assaulted by Harvey.”
Though he wasn’t guilty of those particular allegations, Weinstein was convicted on numerous charges, and the #metoo movement was born. How much the movement actually contributed to what we now know as cancel culture remains to be seen, but what is certain is that more and more celebrities are coming forward and speaking out against cancellation.
Jennifer Aniston is advocating for forgiveness and second chances. Not for the Harvey Weinstein’s of the world, but for the minor offenders, and considering that could be any one of us, we should hope more people follow her lead.
