Many people are making concerted efforts to eat better. In Joe Biden’s America, food is super expensive, and many people have been forced to switch to store brands or shop at discount outlets to make ends meet. Generally, cheaper food isn’t as nutritious as organic, and the results take their toll on lower socioeconomic communities.
Childhood obesity is at an all-time high, and diabetes and pre-diabetes are almost at epidemic levels. Much of this can be traced back to cheaper, less expensive foods and pre-packaged, highly processed foods. It is not a shock that people are eating less healthily simply to stretch an already thin food budget.
Since Joe Biden isn’t going away anytime soon, our food and health crisis will continue to get worse. On the flip side of the spectrum, many folks are making efforts to eat more healthy, organic foods. However, that doesn’t always mean it is necessarily better food.
While “organic” has become a buzzword in the food industry, whether or not organic is any better or more nutritious than conventionally grown food is up for debate. There are small to moderate benefits in terms of nutrients. Also, organically grown fruits and vegetables can be much smaller and more insect-bitten than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.
Organic vegetables can also have considerably more live frogs in the lettuce. At least for one family in Michigan, that has been what they discovered. While prepping a nice, healthy family meal, they got an unwelcome surprise in their “triple-washed” organic lettuce.
A nice salad is healthy and delicious, and fresh, leafy spinach adds lots of iron, vitamins A, C, and K, and folate, whatever that is. However, when this family was unloading their groceries, they found there was more protein in the lettuce than they bargained for, and they were hopping mad.
Amber Worrick, the unwitting mother, told local media: “My daughter was screaming, she was like ‘Oh my God, it’s a frog,’ and I was like, ‘What? Just thank God I didn’t eat the frog.”
The unlucky critter, which was a Pacific tree frog, made the journey from California to Michigan all sealed up in his leafy bed. The frog was alive and wasn’t hoppy with his surroundings. It is almost excusable, considering the frog is the same color as the spinach; however, the issue was with the claims made by the organic company.
Earthbound Farms, the manufacturer of the veggie, claimed on the packaging that the spinach was triple-washed and non-GMO. The unlucky purchaser openly doubted their claim. She said: “On the package, it says three times washed, or something like triple washed. I don’t believe that it was washed or else they would have caught a whole live frog.”
It is safe to assume that either the spinach wasn’t washed at all or that was the cleanest frog in Michigan. Either way, Amber Worrick was having none of it. “I didn’t see anything, didn’t feel heavy. I didn’t feel anything wiggling.”
Worrick returned the package to the Southfield Meijer for a refund, and the little critter was released. Possibly not a great idea since it is not native to Michigan, but the alternative was squishing it, so at least they took the humane route. Hopefully, Earthbound Farms will tighten their quality inspections and keep the local livestock out of the spinach moving forward.
