Dennis Quaid recently discussed, in an interview, how he found faith when he had previously been finding nothing but drugs and drunkenness, and how his faith in God and those who led him to it helped him out of the dark pit of alcoholism. Now he’s talking about how that faith helps him in his marriage.
For some people, the third time is the charm. For Quaid, it’s the fourth time that’s the charm, as he said during a promotional interview for his new album, “Fallen: A Gospel Album for Sinners,” that it is with his fourth wife, Laura Savoie. that God is in the relationship.
Speaking with Extra interviewer Melvin Robert, Quaid said, “I spent a couple years physically recovering from all that [substance abuse],” and that he chose now to release the new, faith-based album because “It’s a calling, I guess.“
Then, digging into his faith, Quaid said, “It’s always been there,” but “Sometimes the lights were off.” Continuing, he said that he was, for a long time, running from his faith and trying to fill the hole in his soul with narcotics: “Or I was running away from it a lot. I tried to do it my way for so long with other things you’re looking to fill that hole with. I was addicted to cocaine for quite a while. I went into rehab for that and got clear of that. They say you need a higher power to overcome that.”
Continuing, he described how a band break-up was what finally led him to get his life in order and find sobriety while reminding Christ, saying, “I had a band back then and it was the night that we were performing at the Palace Theatre in Hollywood and we got a record deal, but we broke up because I was just a mess. I went home and really had this white-light experience and I saw myself continuing down this road and being either dead or in jail or losing anything I really cared about. So, I checked myself into rehab and gutted through it.”
And now things have worked out, as he has found a wife who also places and emphasis on faith and so they can do so together, which is something that he says he has never had before, despite being married three times previously.
