Bud Light has suffered an enormous decline in sales since early April. About five months ago, the beer maker decided to engage in a promotional partnership with transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney that backfired spectacularly.
As conservative beer drinkers have continually boycotted Bud Light, sales have taken a massive hit. Bud Light could even lose its title as the number-one beer in America a lot sooner than anyone anticipated. Modelo Especial has already outsold Bud Light since May, after the financial consequences of the boycott began to materialize.
The American Tribune reported in July how Modelo Especial had remained the top-selling beer in the country for the second consecutive month. Reportedly, Bud Light had held the title of best-selling beer in America for over two decades since 2001.
Since the Dylan Mulvaney disaster, Modelo Especial has grown its overall market share in the beer industry to 8.1 percent, as reported by the American Tribune in July. Bud Light’s market share only sat slightly higher at 8.7 percent as the full-year impact of the Bud Light boycott hasn’t been fully realized.
According to beer industry experts, the writing is on the wall; Bud Light could easily be dethroned from its position as the number-one-selling beer on an annual basis. According to the CEO of Bump Williams Consulting Bump Williams, if trends continue, this will likely happen by the end of the year.
“If Bud Light continues its double-digit declines for the balance of 2023 and Modelo Especial continues to grow at 10% or greater for the balance of the calendar year, then it’s probable that Modelo Especial surpasses Bud Light as the No. 1 selling beer in America on a calendar basis,” Williams said.
However, with a fresh batch of sales data highlighting the never-ending decline in Bud Light sales, Bump Williams Consulting predicts Modelo Especial to overtake the woke beer sooner than expected. For the week ending July 22, Bud Light sales dropped approximately 26.8 percent.
This is a noticeable decline from the prior week’s sales which saw declines of 26.1 percent. In the same time frame, the number two beer Modelo saw its sales increase 13.4 percent. The Mexican beer’s market share also increased to 8.2 percent, while Bud Light’s dipped to 8.4 percent. The data shows that the gap between Bud Light and Modelo Especial continues to narrow.
Speaking on the trends implying the Bud Light could be dethroned, Williams told the New York Post, “It’s going to happen a LOT sooner than anyone had ever thought. We have it surpassing Bud Light mid-August.” Williams continued to say Modelo Especial is “the closest any brand has come to surpassing Bud Light as the King of Beers.”
It is incredible how Bud Light’s fall from grace happened so quickly. Andrew Powell, a contributor for the Daily Caller, summarized what so many conservatives are thinking, stating, “I can’t get over how rapid this fall has been for Bud Light. It’s just crazy considering they were once an elite beer in America. Like we went over earlier, they dominated this country for two decades, and then it all evaporated in a matter of a few months.”
