The father of Clyde Shavers, a Democratic state House candidate in Washington, has come forward to say that his son has lied about his military service in an attempt to win office.
Before these allegations surfaced, Clyde’s website claimed that, “for more than 8 years. He served as a nuclear submarine officer and public affairs officer with tours in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.”
This has now been changed on his campaign website.
“He was commissioned into the nuclear submarine community and later transitioned as a public affairs officer in 2015,” the website now states.
“Clyde was never a submarine officer, not even for a day,” wrote his father Brett, in a three-page document sent to his son’s opponent.
“His political letter is inaccurate and, personally, very painful to me as his son,” Clyde Shavers wrote in an email. “To be clear, this letter is all about politics.”
Clyde’s father said, “Clyde’s use of his family’s history and values as a foundation for his credibility and values has gone farther than I can accept.”
According to Herald Net, Brett Shavers said that his son completed one of the three courses to become a nuclear submarine officer before transitioning into a public relations role.
“You’re taking from someone who has gone through a lot more,” said the father, likening this to stolen valor.
The letter also accuses Clyde of having a “revulsion to wear the uniform,” and “only disdain for the military.”
“There are no words that I have that could come close to overemphasize Clyde’s negative view of the military,” he continued.
“I was honored to be accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy and serve my country,” Clyde Shaves told the Harald Net. “I stayed in the military beyond my service requirement because of dedication to country and the brothers and sisters who served alongside me.”
Clyde’s father Brett also claims that his son has nearly zero ties to the district in which he chose to run for office, Whidbey Island.
“Clydes ties to Whidbey Island, or even to any county in Washington outside of King Country are zero,” Brett said.
“Clyde has told us that he rents a room in a Bed and Breakfast,” Brett continued. “This is his only tie to Whidbey Island… He has never worked or lived there. He pointedly said to us that he picked Whidbey Island because he can win, fully believes that he will, and that he eventually will be the youngest President of the United States.”
Brett finished his letter with this powerful statement.
“We have nothing if we have no integrity. We have nothing if we have no honor. We only have the truth to guide us. As Clyde’s parents, it is our duty to impress the importance of these values upon him, even at our personal risk of being attacked, defamed, or discredited. Our love for our children does not wane, but our values will not be compromised either.”
