With two indictments under his belt, more likely on the way, and the fire, fury, and chaos of 2020 well-known, you might think GOP voters would be weary, wary, or both of Trump. Fortunately for MAGA, however, President Trump has received a huge upswelling of support from American patriots and so is dominating the primary season.
In fact, polling analysts who spoke to the Daily Caller News Foundation claimed that there’s no parallel to Trump and this battle in America’s modern history. Banana republic tactics from the regime, President Trump’s base of immovable support, and the massive field with Trump as the “quasi-incumbent” leader with a race to lose make it an exceptional one.
For example, Kyle Kondik, the managing editor for Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics and a non-partisan polling analyst, told the Daily Caller, “This GOP primary is truly unprecedented, because Trump is not technically an incumbent, but Republican voters seem to be treating him as at least a quasi-incumbent. This primary is similar to 2016 in the sense that the field is large, meaning that it’ll be hard for a non-Trump to consolidate the non-Trump supporters.”
The Daily Caller reports that in addition to the general situation within the GOP in terms of candidates and Trump’s position among them, Mr. Kondik said the legal attacks on Trump add yet another “unique” angle to the 2024 primary without parallel.
Further, Mr. Kondik said, though those indictments could lead to “fatigue” among GOP voters at some point in the primary, that hasn’t occurred yet. In fact, Trump’s support isn’t lagging yet and has actually increased in the wake of the indictments and outrage over the DOJ attacking the leader of the political opposition.
And Mr. Kondik isn’t the only one who sees the Trump and 2024 primary situation as unique. Jon McHenry, a GOP polling analyst and vice president at North Star Opinion Research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the “unique” primary shows that Trump managed to successfully reshape the GOP in his populist image and so the polling is showing things that are without parallel in modern American political history.
Speaking about that, McHenry said, “This really is a unique cycle, at least since we’ve used primaries and caucuses as the primary vehicle to nominate our presidential candidates. In that time, we haven’t had an incumbent president lose a reelection and run again, much less lead in the polls. President Trump’s lead right now is in part a testament to the extent to which he reshaped the party from a conservative party to a populist party.”
He added that the banana republic tactics have backfired on Biden and the left in Trump’s favor, saying, “With the New York charges in particular being seen as politically motivated and questionable legally — with a very different context than holding top secret documents in an unsecure location — the Republicans who might have been ready to move on to a fresh face have at least for now rallied back to the former president.”
