Geraldo Rivera, the longstanding liberal personality on Fox News Channel’s “The Five” who would bicker with the somewhat more conservative hosts, took to Twitter to explain why he is off of The Five and gone from Fox News Channel for good.
According to Geraldo, a frequent target of conservative attacks thanks to his generally left-wing takes, he was told that he was fired from The Five and decided just to quit rather than try to find a new job after the embarrassment of being fired from his show.
In the caption of the post, Geraldo said, “Bumpy day on the North Atlantic. Anyway, I got fired from @TheFive so I quit Fox. After 23 years tomorrow Fox and Friends could be my last appearance on the network. Thanks for the memories.”
In the video itself, Geraldo explained where he was going in his boat, the ocean conditions, and the situation on “The Five.” He said: “John’s beach inland. See the tower very, very bumpy, Lumpy day, Lumpy day out in the North Atlantic Ocean. So, Jones Beach, heading for the World Trade Center. making pretty good time. Anyway, in the holiday rush hour traffic, I’ll probably go faster on the boat, then you would try the Long Island Expressway. So it doesn’t look like I’m gonna be on the five. I mean, I’m not going to be on the five. I’ve been fired from the phone I’ve and as a result of that, I quit. Fox. So we’ll have more to say about that on Fox and Friends tomorrow morning. Thank you.”
On Fox and Friends the next morning Geraldo had more to say, as promised. After a video of some of his more famous moments on The Five rolled, he said, “I feel emotional and deeply moved. I will always remember this morning. It is something that I didn’t expect. This celebration is beyond anything we’ve ever done.”
Then, adding a bit more, he was positive about Fox News and his time there rather than attacking the network. He said, “Thank you. I am deeply – I am honored. I love Fox and the people at Fox. I always will. I will never let anyone separate us. I am beyond grateful, I love you for it.”
However, in a statement to the AP about why he decided to quit Fox News rather than stick it out after being fired from the show, he was less positive. In that statement, he said his departure was the result of a longstanding and growing feud between him and the main personality on “The Five,” Greg Gutfeld. Speaking on that, he said, “There has been a growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences and personal annoyances and gripes… It’s not worth it to me.”
Fox News Channel, in a statement to Mediaite about the Geraldo situation, said, “We reached an amicable conclusion with Geraldo over the past few weeks and look forward to celebrating him tomorrow on Fox & Friends which will be his last appearance on the network.”
