Rainn Wilson, a Hollywood star who rose to fame mainly due to his role in “The Office,” recently spoke about his faith and how it has become so taboo in Hollywood. On a podcast called “No Small Endeavor,” hosted by theologian Lee C Camp, Wilson gave his opinion on the anti-religious side of Hollywood.
For the past twelve years, Wilson says that he has been open about his faith. This willingness to discuss his love of God, however, has turned some popped off to him, he says. Wilson noted that “Frankly, I think it freaks people out. I think that most of Hollywood, especially comedians in Hollywood, talking about God is the uncoolest thing you can ever possibly do.”
Wilson has been on a tear trying to help people understand that our country’s growing abandonment of religion is ripping our communities apart at the seams. He says, “Again, we’ve thrown the spiritual baby out with the religious bathwater, collectively rejecting religion and getting our spirituality sometimes in quite superficial ways, like from a yoga class or just a meditation app or an Instagram that has Rumi quotes on it.”
“And I don’t mean to, I don’t mean to denigrate, you know, New Age folk or people that are looking outside of a religious system for spiritual inspiration,” Wilson said. “But there are universals in art and there are universals in spirituality that humanity desperately needs right now.”
This isn’t the first time that Wilson has pointed out the “anti-Christian” bias of Hollywood. Earlier this year, in March, the actor Tweeted, “I do think there is an anti-Christian bias in Hollywood. As soon as the David character in “The Last of Us” started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be a horrific villain. Could there be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”
In the interview, Wilson did go on to explain that while he has hard evident, in the form of emails or text messages, he is sure that this bias is present in the film industry. While he says that it is hard to prove that his faith has hurt his career, he says the he is absolutely certain that his career has not been aided by his love for the Lord.
“I can just kind of sense a collective eye roll about it,” Wilson said. “It certainly doesn’t help my career. I’m not doing any, any of this for any self-promotion or, or career.”
As the country continues to move further apart on many hot-topic cultural issues, the divide will only worsen until we return to a more shared ideology. A reemergence of faith in America would certainly become the foundation upon with to heal the social strife that the country has faced in the last decade.
