SNL alum Rob Schneider rightly said that SNL had died using this clip from 2016 to prove it. I’d argue it died years before that, but either way, the hollow shell trading on the legacy name that once featured the likes of Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Bill Murrary, Eddie Murphy, Chris Farley, David Spade, Norm MacDonald and so many other talented comedian is beyond salvation.
In its latest mockery of comedic effort, the cold open from this weekend featured an uninteresting PBS news anchor and three seriously unfunny caricatures of rising Republicans in the midterms. In fairness, Herschel Walker and Dr. Oz are certainly ripe for the picking if done well, but when it comes to a complete absence of commentary on Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and John Fetterman, it comes off merely as partisan hackery.
And SNL is much more interested in portraying these candidates as idiot simpletons without a hint of nuance or complexity. It is not hyperbole to suggest elementary school talent shows feature more laughs than SNL these days.
So here it was, NBC’s moribund weekly production, churning out more garbled rubbish than Fetterman if he were a Philly garbage collector.
Saturday Night Live shows what an interview would be like if Republican candidates were honest.
Herschel Walker, Dr. Oz and Kari Lake are total clowns, but they could win if Democrats don’t get out the vote. pic.twitter.com/dc74JvwP0X

The clip begins with a fake Judy Woodruff – seriously, who? – on PBS interviewing the aforementioned Herschel Walker, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Arizona’s supernova candidate Kari Lake, who is leading in some polls by double digits for giving the middle finger to the establishment.
Right off the bat, aside from doing stupid impersonantions, SNL chose to do PBS because…why? I am already uninterested.
The fake Herschel introduces himself by saying: “Hello, Judas. My name is Herschel Walker, Texas Ranger, and I am running for president of the United Airlines.”
When sked how he was still in the hunt, fake Walker replied, “The whole world is a mystery, ain’t it? For example, a Thermos. It keeps the hot things hot, but also the cold things cold. My question is: How do it decide? So we gonna be looking into that very much.”
So none of that is remotely funny. The “interview” with Walker last way longer than it should have before pivoting to an adult actor named Mikey – if you wanted more proof leftists were children – who likewise made the former television host and megatar a rube: “Hello, Judy! My Pennsylvania Phillies are in the World Series and I just had a delicious Philadelphia cheese and steak. Yum!”
SNL then managed to insert a Fetterman comment, but one that still made Oz the larger idiot. “I always told myself, you can win this election if you’re honest, if you’re fair, and if your opponent has a debilitating medical emergency. So we’re very lucky.”
Finally, the fake Kari Lake made an appearance, and to the actress’s credit, she did a pretty good job with the look and sound. Too bad it all fell apart when she opened her mouth.
“Great to be with you, Judy, on your sweet little show full of lies.” I take it back, this part was awesome and this is exactly what Lake would say. Whereas SNL thinks they’re being clever, really they’re just reminding us of their complete self-delusions and lack of self-awareness.
Fake Lake continued:
“I’m normal, Judy, I’m just a regular hometown gal, constantly in soft focus and lit like a ’90s Cinemax soft-core. And frankly, I’ve just clicked with many of the wonderful, terrified elderly people here in Arizona, the Florida of the West. Also, I’m a fighter. In my life, I’ve sent back over 2,000 salads and I’m not afraid to do the same thing with democracy.”
None of that makes sense. They had a good thing going with Lake and jettisoned it for horrific writing. The one thing going for SNL is that Republicans will regain leadership and prominence in D.C. and across the country in governors’ roles. This will give them plenty of fodder so they can keep writing jejune jokes that appeal to no one save for infantilized minds.
This show needs to be canceled yesterday.
