Things continue to get weirder in Joe Biden’s America, this time with Roger Waters, the co-founder of the band Pink Floyd, ripped into the foreign policy of the United States under Slow Joe Biden and defended how China and Russia are acting, obviously putting CNN personality Michael Smerconish on his back foot.
The back and forth started when Smerconish asked Waters to explain a recent video in which he called Slow Joe (among others) a war criminal, a question obviously meant to try and get him to bend the knee and say the US is the good guy right now.
Waters wouldn’t do so. Instead, he defended his viewpoint and attacked Biden’s Ukraine policy along the same lines as many dissidents, saying that Biden should be encouraging peace talks rather than war and that his fanning the flames of war make him a war criminal. As Waters put it:
“Joe Biden is fueling the fire in Ukraine for a start. That’s a huge crime.
“Why won’t the United States of America encourage Zelensky to negotiate, obviating the need for this horrific, horrendous war?”
Smerconish was obviously not happy with that answer and fired back in the defense of Biden and Zelensky, saying “you’re blaming the party that got invaded. You’ve got this reversed.”
Normally, that would be enough to end it, as few have the courage to push back against the “current thing.” But not in this case. Rather, Waters kept fighting back, blaming the US and NATO for the war.
In his words, the Russian invasion of the Ukraine “is basically about the actions and reaction of NATO pushing right up to the Russian border, which they promised they wouldn’t do when Gorbachev negotiated the withdrawal of the USSR from the whole of Eastern Europe.”
Smerconish tried to fight back by claiming that the US is a “liberator,” a comment that drew nothing but scorn from Waters, who fired back, saying “You have no role as liberators!”
He then went on to harangue the US for only getting involved in World War II after Pearl Harbor, at which point, he said, Russia had basically won the war. That timeline is a bit incorrect; the Russians were in serious trouble in the winter of 1941, as the Wehrmacht had reached the edge of Moscow.
However, his basic point that World War II in the West was won largely with Russian blood (the Soviets suffered over 20 million casualties), is largely accurate, though it leaves out the roll played by US equipment in the war.
In any case, visibly agitated, Waters then told Smerconish to “go away and read a bit more and then try to figure out what the United States would do if the Chinese were putting nuclear-armed missiles into Mexico and Canada.”
Waters went on to claim that Taiwan is part of China and that the Chinese are less bad than the US because they didn’t invade Iraq and kill a million people in 2003.
