An entire town has gone viral after social media caught wind of their heartfelt goodbye to town superstar Mellow. Mellow, a dog that has lived in Dupont, Pennsylvania, since 2009, announced that the pup would be taking one final walk through town to say goodbye to the many neighbors that he met on his daily strolls.
In a letter that the owner, Kevin Curry, wrote on behalf of Mellow, the entire town was invited to stand outside along the intended path of Mellow’s final walk and offer pets and scratches to the beloved neighborhood pet.

Mellow’s letter explained why this would be the last time the locals may get to see the dog, writing, “I was recently diagnosed with lymphoma and will be leaving for doggie heaven in June. I’m not sure exactly when I will go, but each day over the past few weeks has been a struggle for me to get around the neighborhood like I am used to.”
Mellow was not all dark clouds and rain in the letter, as the tone quickly shifted to one of gratitude and love for those that have been a part of the twice daily walks for the last few years. Mellow said, “Some neighbors may have pet me or given me treats before while others I may only know through their own dogs who say hello me as we pass by. Regardless of how well we know each other, you have made my life so much richer than any rescue dog could have hoped for. I am so grateful to have such caring neighbors.”
Like any great pillar of a community, Mellow also used this opportunity to give back. Mellow offered a coupon for animal treats to be donated or given to other dogs. Mellow added, “To show gratitude for your kindness, I am including a small token of appreciation. Please use this on your own animals if you have any or to buy a treat for a pet you know or donate to the local shelter to help dogs like me.”
This tearjerking letter, penned by Kevin Curry, was not taken lightly by the town. Residents of Dupont came out in droves to cheer and support Mellow as she took one last survey of her town. According to one neighbor who spoke to the New York Post, there were 20 people per street lined along the sidewalk to show their own appreciation for Mellow.
Mellow was offered free ice cream at the local ice cream shop to commemorate a job well done. While some in the town had to step away to cry privately, many more showered Curry and Mellow with cheers and support, making their final stroll together one that both will remember forever. At the end of the day, as the town quieted down, they had no idea that this would become of the most emotional viral news stories of the year.
