In the town of Leander, TX, a liquor store clerk was confronted by three alleged thieves who were allegedly trying to steal alcohol from the store. The argument escalated and led to the clerk firing at one of the alleged thieves, 22-year-old Johnny Cabrera, who was struck by the clerk’s gunfire and found later by police about a mile and a half away from the liquor store.
The Leander Police Department posted about the incident on Facebook, describing what happened and who was involved before asking for more information about community members.
Beginning the statement, the Leander Police Department said that they were first called to the liquor store late in the evening because of a reported theft, having been told that three individuals had stolen bottles of liquor from the store. The department said: “On Wednesday, May 31, at about 9 p.m., Leander Police Department responded to an emergency call of an alleged theft at Leander Liquors located at 2403 S. Hwy 183 in Leander. While on site, Leander officers were told that three individuals had removed bottles from the store shelves and exited without paying, which prompted the store clerk to discharge a firearm.”
That alleged attempted robbery then escalated, with another local police department receiving a report of a person who was shot having been found about a mile and a half away from the liquor store at issue. The department said that the person found matched the description of one of individuals involved in the liquor store robbery, saying, “Shortly after the Leander emergency call, Cedar Park Police Department responded to a report of a person suffering from gunshot wounds near 1701 N. Bell Boulevard in Cedar Park, which is located 1.5 miles south of Leander Liquors. Leander Police officers arrived at the scene and confirmed that the person suffering from gunshot wounds matched the description of an individual involved in the alleged theft at Leander Liquors.”
The department then added that the man found, 22-year-old Johnny Cabrera, died while on his way to the hospital, saying, “Johnny Cabrera, 22, of Cedar Park died from the gunshot wounds while in transport to St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, and Leander Police officers are communicating with family members. No other details are available at this time as Leander Police Department continues its investigation.”
The department then asked the community for any other information about the incident, saying, “Anyone with information related to this incident is urged to contact Detective Carlos Villarreal at 512-528-2811 or [email protected].”
Cabrera’s mother did the usual and claimed her son was an angel, saying, “He was really sweet. He loved helping people. He was really sweet, nice, helpful, friendly. He was liked by a lot of people, especially his high school friends.” Arrest records show a Johnny Cabrera having been arrested for aggravated robbery, with a hearing scheduled for 6/12.
The clerk has so far not been charged, with the police investigating whether the three alleged thieves posed a threat and if they were carrying weapons.
