ABC’s “The View,” has apparently gone far enough to the Uniparty side of the left that even one of the New York Times’ opinion writers found it a bit ridiculous, noting that all the co-hosts of the show do is bicker about minor points while agreeing about all the important things, particularly when it comes to supporting President Biden.
Beginning the article, the author, Megan Stack, notes how excited and supportive the co-hosts of “The View” were when Biden announced his re-election campaign. They were all on board, supporting him for standing up for “our democracy” and “lavishing praise” on him while downplaying the importance of investigations into his family.
And, of course, there is the constant anti-GOP sentiment. To them, Ron DeSantis is a “fascist” and “bigot” while Trump is so horrible that Whoopi Goldberg won’t even use his name, referring to him as “you know who.”
Such is what Ms. Stack, who describes herself as “a regular Viewer for years,” says when laying the basic groundwork for her subsequent attack on “The View” as a “chorus of conformity.” Making that point, she said, “Which is funny because, if you ask me, the co-hosts don’t argue nearly enough. At least, not substantively. Not anymore. The freewheeling discussions that once evoked a spectrum of American opinion on everything from reproductive rights to foreign policy — those have mostly fallen silent. “The View” has become a chorus of conformity.”
Continuing, she notes that all the co-hosts, regardless of their ostensible political leanings, agree on the main points. Whether its access to abortion or implementing stricter gun control laws, supporting Ukraine or supporting Biden while hating Trump, they’re all generally on board. As Ms. Stack put it: “Even on topics notorious for splitting American opinion — the need for “common-sense gun reform,” protecting L.G.B.T.Q. rights and funding the war in Ukraine — they don’t find much to debate one another about. Even those who privately consider abortion a sin agree that access should be preserved in some cases.”
She then notes that the show and its co-hosts don’t even make a pretence of having a Trump supporter on the show, arguing that the closest they came was Megan McCainn, who hated Trump, and that all having her on led to was a constant, “struggle session” (a term from China’s bloody Cultural Revolution), that led to denunciations of Trump and no real support of GOP policies. “[Megan McCainn’s] early weeks on the show were full of struggle sessions in which her co-hosts (most notably Ms. Hostin and Ms. Navarro) snubbed and needled her until she coughed up, yet again, a denunciation of Mr. Trump,” Ms. Stack notes.
And why is that, why does Ms. Stack think they have no real conversations and push the party line in every discussion? Because of how corporatized everything is now, leading to a prioritization of profit via ad revenue and not offending viewers above all else. “I envision behind them the suited figures of the ABC network and the Walt Disney Company, which owns the network, and the companies that buy ads to sell things in the breaks, all of which benefit from predictable centrist leadership and regard eruptions of popular sentiment as an undesirable expense,” she said.
So, if you need another reason to mock and not watch “The View,” there it is. And, shockingly, the NYT provided it.
