In a strange oath-swearing ceremony at the University of Minnesota, medical students pledged to use their position in the medical field to fight back against the gender binary and to work to slow climate change, among other things.
The Class of 2026 spoke this jarring oath at the University of Minnesota medical school swore by this pledge at a “White Coat Ceremony” in August of this year.

“We commit to uprooting the legacy and perpetuation of structural violence deeply embedded within the health care system,” reads the pledge which was handed out to students at the event. “We recognize inequities built by past and present traumas rotten in white supremacy, colonialism, the gender binary, ableism, and all forms of oppression.”
These Minnesota doctors are being told that their job is not only to provide good care to their patients but also to move society along in its fight against white privilege.
“Knowing that health is intimately connected to our environment, we commit to healing our planet and communities,” the pledge later says.
For climate change to be considered one of the foremost issues that these young doctors-to-be should concern themselves with is a bizarre twist on the more common Hippocratic oath.
Doctors are also asked to “pledge to honor all Indigenous ways of healing that have been historically marginalized by Western medicine.”
This part strikes many readers as being a moral wrongdoing, as doctors today should be using the best, most cutting-edge medicine that science can offer instead of some tribal cure founded hundreds or thousands of years ago.
The University of Minnesota medical school seems to see nothing wrong with this pledge, as their media relations officer Kat Dodge gave this explanation for the oath.
“Each year at the University of Minnesota Medical School, the incoming students work with faculty to write an oath that reflects these core elements, values, and ethics the class aspires to uphold.”
“The mission of the U of M Medical School is to train future leaders,” she continued, “who will care for the health of all Minnesotans while addressing education, equitable and inclusive health care delivery, and innovation in medicine and science.”
Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marc Siegel appeared on the Fox News channel to give his two cents about this “White Coat Ceremony.”
“If we start having to give out herbs rather than use the latest technology, that might have an influence on patient car,” said the doctor.
“They’re also committed to healing our planet – well, how about healing ourselves and healing our patients?”
“We’re supposed to be studying medical textbooks,” he continued. “‘What’s wrong with this patient?’ It’s called differential diagnosis. ‘Am I giving the right treatment? Am I ordering the right test?’” Says Dr. Siegel, while he gives an example of the proper mindset to care for a patient.
According to the U of M medical school mission, diversity is a core tenant in training their students.
“The University of Minnesota Medical School is dedicated to providing excellence across our mission – high-quality education for students of all backgrounds; innovative and cutting-edge research and exceptional clinical outcomes that promote health equity.”
