Celebrity Mark Wahlberg recently revisited his humble beginnings at a grocery store in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he bagged groceries as a teenager. At the Stop & Shop grocery store, Wahlberg made a mere $3.65 per hour compared to his vast net worth in the hundreds of millions today. See the video below.
In a video of him in the store’s parking lot, Mark said, “All right, right here is where the whole hustle started.” He continued, “In 1998, I was working at this Stop & Shop on Newport Avenue in Quincy, but it was over there. They moved the store.” Although he said 1998, Wahlberg likely meant to say 1988 since he was already famous by the late nineties.
“I was bagging groceries,” Wahlberg continued, “$3.65 an hour while I was right up the street getting my driver’s ed. The same day I turned 17, I got my driver’s license, I bought a Pontiac LeMans s—box for $200 … We’re gonna see if I can get my job back.” The actor proceeded to walk into the store and tell the cashier, “I’m getting my old job back,”
Mark Wahlberg has also been in the news lately for publicly sharing his Christian faith, something few Hollywood stars do publicly. He stated, “It’s just the most important aspect of my life. It’s the most important thing. It’s afforded me all the things that I’ve been able to accomplish in my life — my faith, my discipline.”
He continued, “I don’t know that it’s not popular. I just kind of focus on me again. I don’t shy away from my faith, but I also don’t jam it down anybody’s throat. I’ve always said that I hope God is a movie fan. I mean, I’ve made some movies, whether it be “Boogie Nights” or even “Ted” where, you know, they could be a bit questionable. But I also don’t want to compromise my artistic integrity. But as a parent and as a husband, those things definitely weigh into my decision-making. But I do like taking chances and risks. But I also was really proud of making a movie that was a love letter to my faith.”
In a separate interview, Wahlberg spoke about when he realized his calling from God. He said, “[The faith] part of the discipline has really afforded me all the other wonderful things in my life, my family, my career, being able to turn my life around. I grew up from very humble beginnings, obviously had a troubled youth. Once I realized that God was calling me and really wanting to help me and turn my life around, and knew that I had potential. Once I started to become more disciplined, really, the world became full of opportunity. So, I just want to share that with people and their own. But just being the best versions of themselves.”
He continued, “There’s been many things, you know, I would have to say becoming a parent, becoming a husband, certainly. We talked about my youth and that sort of thing. But I think it’s getting older. And, here’s the great thing. Every year you get an opportunity for a reset. We’re all still weak in the flesh. We just want to be closer to God and more like God.”
