Parents in the state of Washington reacted quickly to hunt down a suspect who allegedly kidnapped their one-month-old baby when he allegedly stole their car over the weekend, according to the local sheriff’s department.
That happened at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning in Clark County, Washington. There, the alleged car thief and kidnapper jumped into their car, a 2022 Audi, when they weren’t paying attention to it.
According to KOIN 6, the father pleaded for the man to give the baby back, telling KOIN 6, “I said, ‘Hey my son’s in there, just give me my son. Take my car, just, please, give me my son.’ He hopped in and drove.”
The dad, John, then called 911. Clark County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies located the vehicle with the child still inside but the suspect had already fled, the sheriff’s department reported. Fortunately, the one-month-old baby sustained no injuries. The sheriff’s deputies detained a man for a brief period after they recovered the vehicle, but they then released him when it was determined he was not involved, according to the report.
However, the parents were able to track down the suspect when they realized someone was using their credit cards. Speaking to KOIN 6, John said, “He started running up our business card, to which Ashley had the notion of ‘Well, let’s just leave it and we’ll see where it goes.’”
The two parents then, once they realized what was going on, tracked the purchases to a mall. They showed up there and saw the suspect, Mario Dorian Andrews, in a JC Penny. They held the suspect down until authorities arrived. At that point, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies and officers from the Vancouver Police Department responded to the situation and arrested Andrews for theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping in the second degree, and reckless endangerment.
In a flash alert that they shared the link to on Twitter, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office covered many of those details and said:
On 4/8/2023 at approximately 0749 hours, deputies were dispatched to a kidnapping at 1501 NE 99th Street. The victim and reporting person told 911 that an unknown male had taken his 2022 Audi, which had his one month old child in the back seat. Deputies came into the area and located the vehicle near NE 88th Street and Highway 99 with the child still inside. The suspect, later identified as Mario Andrews, had already fled the area and was not located at that time. The child did not appear to be injured, but was checked by medics and was provided back to the parents. A male was detained by deputies for a brief period then released when we determined he was not involved.
Later in the day, the victim reported their credit cards being used at Vancouver Mall and Sheriff’s Office deputies as well as Vancouver Police Department officers responded. Mario Andrews was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping in the second degree and reckless endangerment. Vancouver Police Department also arrested him for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and attempt to elude from an earlier case.
