Longtime Democrat politician Nancy Pelosi announced on Friday that she would be running for Congress yet again, saying in her announcement that she wants to spread the values of San Francisco to the rest of America. Pelosi has represented San Francisco in Congress since 1987, so for more than 36 years.
In the tweet in which she announced her reelection campaign, former Speaker of the House Pelosi said, “Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery. Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote. -Nancy”

Given that San Francisco is swarming with crowds of homeless people and other vagrants setting up camp on streets, leaving their waste and drugs on the side of the road, and generally making the city unpleasant if not uninhabitable for normal people, it would seem to many that the last thing America needs is more “San Francisco values.”
Such is what people on Twitter said, commenting on her post with snide remarks such as “Your city is covered in feces and drugs. You can keep your values” and “San Fransisco has an actual Crap App so that people can avoid stepping in human excrement on the sidewalks.”
It would appear that, though Pelosi is running again, she does not plan to be on the Democrats’ House leadership team for the next Congress. When asked earlier in 2023 about being on House leadership, she said, “No. I sometimes wonder why I don’t, but I think that I’ve done my time. I loved it. It was a great honor. Imagine, to be Speaker of the House, second in line to the presidency, which of course would never happen, but nonetheless, the prestige of it all. I love my members. I love the institution.”
Pelosi has been Speaker of the House twice. The first time, she held the Speaker’s gavel from 2007 to 2011 and was the first female Speaker of the House. The second time was in 2019, when the Democrats reclaimed the House during the Trump presidency. She then lost it when the Democrats lost the House in 2022, and has since stepped down from House leadership roles.
In any case, Rep. Pelosi has now been in office for decades and, at 83, is well beyond retirement age. With numerous other elderly politicians in office, such as Mitch McConnell and Dianne Feinstein, many are calling for Congress to implement age limits, or at least mental health checks, for its members so that America has fewer elderly and mentally failing leaders.
Even Nikki Haley called for some form of that in a recent interview, saying, “I think there should be mental competency tests. And I don’t care if they’re for everybody 50 and older. I don’t care if they’re for the entire Congress. These are basic tests, Bob. These are, tell us where you were born. Name four words that start with the same letter. How many grandchildren do you have? These are basic questions that anyone should be able to answer. And the way you do that is just, when a candidate files to run for office, incumbent or newcomer, they have to give their financial disclosures.”
