Yet another young student has “died suddenly,” this time in Canada. That would be Theo Gibbs, an 18-year-old baseball player. He died suddenly in his sleep, passing away at his family’s home in Regina on December 30, 2022.
Gibbs, the Western Standard reports, “began his baseball career at the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s Regina White Sox before going to the Martin Sports Academy and the Regina Red Sox Academy.” Gibbs was at home recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered while playing collegiate baseball when he passed away.
But that bright career in baseball was snatched from him, as he “died suddenly” in his sleep like numerous other young adults, such as a senior in high school in the Las Vegas area.
In any case, a GoFundMe was created for the Gibbs family and in it, the creator described what happened to Gibbs, saying:
Hi. My name is Chantel, and I am helping to gather our community to support the Gibbs family. They are facing a very challenging time after the passing of their beautiful son and brother, Theo Gibbs. After experiencing some health issues this fall, he unexpectedly passed away December 30, 2022 at the age of 18 years old. Theo Gibbs and his family have been valued members of many Regina communities including baseball, hockey, teaching, and music.
Continuing, the GoFundMe description went on to say “The unbelievable pain of losing this young man with an amazing future ahead of him breaks all of our hearts. We grieve for his parents and brothers, his extended family, and all of his friends. We know many difficult days are ahead for them, but we want them to know we are here for them every step of the way. Thanks in advance for your donation to help with funeral costs for this special young man and supporting the Gibbs Family.”
Subsequent updates to the GoFundMe page said:
“Thanks so much for your support to the Gibbs Family. The kindness and generosity is overwhelming. I plan to update Dana and family end of day January 2, 2023 and start transferring them the funds to plan for the days ahead.
Much love to everyone.”
“Dana has expressed her sincere gratitude for the support her family is receiving. I’m sure in their own time, the family will be in touch. The banking and transferring process takes a couple of days, but I will update when they have received the funds. Thanks again to an amazing community of people who are so willing to help.”
“The love for this family and for Theo has been shared in numerous ways throughout the community. I know many of you have given support in multiple opportunities- thanks for choosing the gofundme to help with funeral and related costs. We will close the fund on Monday after a final push this weekend. As our kids head back to school and sports this week, I know we’ll continue to look for ways to support the Gibbs Family, in the days ahead. Your love and generosity has been inspiring to everyone involved.”
“Thanks everyone. Donations have now been closed and the money has been transferred to the Gibbs family. Dana, Kory, Townes and Ali will get to read your many heartfelt messages in time. 555 donations were made, and just over $47000 was given to the family. Although I set it up the category as “funeral and memorial costs”, Kory and Dana will use the money as they see fit. Easing financial burden in the days ahead and allowing them time and space to grieve as a family was our way of acknowledging this very sad time and showing them our love and support. Thanks for entrusting me with this process.
Much love to everyone.”
