A 16-year-old charged with murder in North Carolina recently let out a shriek and nearly collapsed in court after discovering he was denied bond. Sean Simpson, of Gastonia, North Carolina, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of 16-year-old Zaquavious Dawkins. Reportedly, Simpson will be tried as an adult and is being held without bail.
According to prosecutors, Dawkins was murdered as he was running an errand for his disabled mother, to gather medical supplies. Allegedly, Simpson drove by and opened fire on Dawkins and a friend he was walking with. Dawkins died as a result of the shooting while his friend was injured. Simpson is being tried as an adult, reportedly thanks to a new law passed in December.
Dawkins’ grandmother, Eveleana Dawkins, says her grandson’s death is “affecting everybody. Even the neighborhood he lives in.” Dawkins’ aunt Denise Wilson said about her nephew, “He was sweet. He was kind. He would do anything for anybody. I mean, all you have to do is just say, ‘Tank, will you go do this? Yes, ma’am. Yes, sir.’”
Dawkins’ family claimed the two teens got into an altercation last year, but assumed it had been since resolved. “For him to not be here today, we’re all heartbroken. We’re heartbroken,” Wilson added. While appearing before a judge, Simpson was visibly emotional, wiping away tears. As the judge informed him that he would be held without bond, Simpson fell backward and let out a gasp. “I love you, mama. I love you, mama,” Simpson sobbed.
Speaking about the consequences of Simpson’s actions, Wilson said, “(You’re) out here doing doing big boy things, and this is what’s going to happen. You got to suffer the consequences.” The murder has rattled the Gastonia community, serving as a shocking reminder about the reality of youth violence and its horrific impact on families.
Conservative commentator Collin Rugg wrote about the incident on X, “16-year-old Sean Simpson, charged with m*rder, shrieks and collapses in court after a judge tells him his bond was denied. Satisfying. Simpson faces first-degree m*rder charges relating to the de*th of 16-year-old Zaquavious Dawkins. Prosecutors allege that Dawkins and a friend were walking on South Chester Street in Gastonia, North Carolina when Simpson drove by and opened fire on them.”
Rugg continued, “Dawkins sadly passed and the friend was injured. Dawkins was running an errand for his disabled mother at the time of the incident. Simpson was seen crying in court and is being charged as an adult thanks to a new law change that took effect in December.” Commentator Gunther Eagleman chimed in, “It’s about time people are held accountable. Taking someone else’s life is not forgivable by anyone but God. Lock him up for the rest of his life.”

Another person commented, “They need to make a lifetime documentary about his life before and during jail and play it on repeat in every inner city in the country. Maybe these young people will stop trying to be cool and understand what happens in jail and that this is not going to be tolerated anymore.” Similarly, another comment read, “Why aren’t these parents teaching their kids they cannot take another life? This boy was old enough to know better. Taking another life is big and should have big consequences. He made that choice.”
