A 13-year-old teen in Denver, Colorado, was arrested on Friday, February 2, over a deadly shooting on a public bus that occurred on January 27, 2024. There were two victims of the shooting incident, one of whom died and the other of whom suffered a minor injury.
According to the local media, it was 60-year-old Richard Sanchez who died. He was transported to the hospital for treatment for the gunshot wounds he suffered during the incident, but sadly did not survive his wounds.
The Denver Police Department announced the teen’s arrest in connection with the shooting and described what happened during the shooting in a press statement released on February 2. In the statement, the Department first said, “The Denver Police Department announces the arrest of a juvenile male for the fatal shooting of a 60-year-old male, which occurred on Saturday, January 27, 2024.“
Continuing, it described the shooting and what officers initially found when they responded to it, providing, “On that date, at approximately 6:41 p.m., Denver Police officers responded to investigate a shooting that occurred on a bus near the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue. When officers arrived, they located an adult male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.“
Explaining the background to the shooting and what dispute prompted the deadly use of force, the Denver Police Department said, “At this stage of the investigation, it appears there was verbal exchange between the suspect and victim about the victim’s leg blocking the aisle on the bus, and the suspect then shot the victim.” It added, “A second victim suffered a minor injury, was treated at the scene, and did not require transport to the hospital.“
The police department then described the investigation that led to the teen’s arrest, writing, “Through the extensive investigation, detectives identified the suspect to be a 13-year-old male who was taken into custody late yesterday afternoon and is currently being held for Investigation of First-Degree Murder. The investigation into this homicide is ongoing. The final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.”
The department also noted that the suspect’s young age is why no booking photo of him or even a name have been provided. It wrote, “Since the arrestee is a juvenile, the booking photo and probable cause statement are not available for release.”
Sadly, that wasn’t the only homicide situation with which the Denver Police had to deal on February 2. In a second statement on that day, the department announced that another suspect was arrested for a deadly shooting on that day. “Today, the Denver Police Department announces the arrest of Charles Dorsey (DOB: 11/9/84) for the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old female, which occurred early this morning, February 2, 2024,” the press statement provided.
Continuing, the statement noted, “At approximately 12:29 a.m., Denver Police officers responded to investigate a reported shooting outside of an apartment building in the 1400 block of North Xenia Street. When officers arrived, they located an adult female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The incident is being investigated as a domestic-violence related homicide as it appears the suspect and victim were known to each other and involved in a relationship.”
It then added, “Responding officers encountered Charles Dorsey upon their arrival at the scene, and as a result of information learned through the ensuing investigation, Dorsey was formally arrested and is now being held in custody for Investigation of First-Degree Murder. The final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.“
